Artist Interview With Sarah Truman

Today’s Artist Interview Is With Sarah Truman From The United Kingdom.
Whopple: How Long Have You Been An Artist?
Sarah: 25 years (on & off)
Whopple: Tell Us About Your First Attempts To Be Creative?
Sarah: When I was younger, I used to go to evening art groups after school. I became interested in figure drawing and still life. I also produced a few drawings of my bedroom and the view of the garden from my bedroom window. It was also at this time that I discovered Leonardo Da Vinci and Salvadore Dali and became inspired by them.
I also went through a phase of pressing foliage from the garden, keeping these as records of plant life, which I then made drawings of.
Whopple: Do You Make A Living With Your Art?
Sarah: No, I make an occasional income.
Whopple: How Many Hours A Day Do You Create?
Sarah: About four hours on weekends.
Whopple: How Did You Pick Your Creative Mediaum?
Sarah: I have always had a talent for pencil drawings. When I was in college I developed a technique using watercolors inspired by the ancient Chinese style and also Impressionist painting. I like the effects of pencil and wash pictures particularly. More recently, I have become interested in encaustic art, from attending a few classes, although I use my own method more often than not.
Whopple: What Are Your Inspirations?
Sarah: I’m drawn to portraiture because I like the challenge of producing a good likeness. I find faces and expressions of particular interest, capturing the mood of the moment. Also inspired by historical themes, especially olde world buildings. I like the detail involved on producing a good likeness, also of capturing the atmosphere associated with the place.
Currently, I’m inspired by themes with a magical, mystic feel, sor of Harry Potterish. I find the nebulous qualities of the wax medium in encaustic art rather absorbing; sometimes it’s almost as if the images I produce appear from my subconscious, it’s really very extraordinary!
Whopple: What Is Your Favorite Art Related Book?
Sarah: Encaustic Art: How to Paint with Wax by Michael Bossom.
Whopple: How Do You Recharge When Your Creativity Hits The Wall?
Sarah: I’ve joined an Art Society, I find I’m re-motivated.
Whopple: What Was Your First Job?
Sarah: An artist for a Nature Conservation Trust. I designed material for periodicals, posters, leaflets, etc. Most of these were pen and ink drawings, a few of which I have forwarded images of to my agent, at least those that I still have.
Whopple: What Are Your Favorite Snacks?
Sarah: Baguettes with various fillings – especially prawn mayo and Wiltshire ham and cheese.
Whopple: What Gives You Hope In The World?
Sarah: Spirituality and faith in God.
Whopple: What Do You Wish You Could Do?
Sarah: Finish my book! Still waiting for the results of some genealogical research relating to it; although this is a case of tying up a few loose ends. Even so, the finds could prove a point or two, which would be quite significant.
Whopple: What Are Your Artistic Goals?
Sarah: To find a wider market for my work, and perhaps make a living from it.
Whopple: What Has Been Your Most Exciting Moment As An Artist?
Sarah: I have been quite enthused facilitating art workshops for various groups in the community over a number of years. The excitement comes from motivating others to explore their own creativity with positive effect. I’m most excited by producing design solutions for art projects e.g. logo images or T-shirt designs, and getting paid well for doing it.
