Today’s Artist Interview Is With Helen Janow Miqueo

Whopple: How long have you been an artist?
Helen: I can say that I have been painting since I was born. As long as I remember, I have been creating something. Creativity was always in my family. My grandfather wanted to be an artist, but World War II interrupted his dreams.
My grandmother was an incredibly talented woman who created very beautiful, intricate embroidery and crochet-work. My mother is an architect. Following in my family’s steps, I am also an artist.

Whopple: Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Helen: I, honestly, can’t remember. It was such a long time ago when I was a child. But I am sure I was covered with paint and paint was all over
the place.

Whopple: Do you make a living with your art?
Helen: I am a professional artist and graphic designer. I would say it is a
combination of passion and business. Born in Russia, I successfully
completed Moscow’s School of Art and hold an AA Degree in Graphic
Design. I have exhibited at numerous California galleries and On-line
Galleries. My work can also be found in many private and corporate
collections around the country and abroad.

Whopple: How did you pick your creative medium?
Helen: Over the years I have been trying and experimenting with many different mediums and techniques: oil, tempera, gouache, acrylics… I settled on acrylics. I create my pouring paintings by mixing acrylic paint with water and pouring the mixture onto the canvas, creating free-flowing shapes and forms. This technique requires a lot of flexibility from a painting medium and acrylics are just perfect for it. The main advantage of acrylics is that they are water-based and can be used as watercolors or as an opaque medium. Drying time is excellent as well as their tolerance for correction. In my recent paintings, I used a combination of brush and pouring as well as Art Deco style with Expressionism.

Whopple: What are your inspirations?
Helen: My art was influenced and inspired by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko andWassily Kandinsky. However, over the years, I have developed a uniqueand distinctive style of my own. I called it Unique Acrylic Pouring
Technique™. I also find inspiration in nature and music.

Whopple: How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Helen: I found that my busy schedule and the change of activity help me to recharge my creativity.

Whopple: What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Helen: Unfortunately, I have no time for snacks when I am working on my
paintings. But I do like to have some juice or tea near by.

Whopple: What gives you hope in the world?
Helen: I believe it would be creativity, which brings people together.

Whopple: What do you wish you could do?
Helen: I think it would be photography. I took a photography class in college and was fascinated with the ability of light to capture, convey and
preserve for eternity the fleeting moments of life.

Helen: I would like to continue to explore and develop my artistic style and vision.
