Whopple: How long have you been an artist?
Anthony:
For as long as I can remember, I have thought of myself as an artist. My grandmother was a painter and in my earliest years she encouraged me in my first attempts to draw pictures. In grade school, my drawings were praised by many of my more sympathetic teachers even though the work was done out of boredom in their classes. My 5th grade teacher called me the “class artist” and that label stuck and fed my frail ego.

Whopple: Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Anthony:
They were doodles and daydreaming drawings mostly when I was very young, but I progressed to illustrating my stories and then copying works by great artists out of books. My grandmother guided me and signed me up for a Saturday art class at the world-class Wadsworth Atheneum Museum in Hartford, Connecticut, where I grew up. To this day, I remember taking the bus from my suburban home with my art supplies in hand and then walking through the huge hallways of the museum with their gigantic paintings and tapestries, the medieval suits of armor which seemed to stand guard, and then past the Egyptian room with its mummy. At the time I used to have scary dreams about being locked up overnight in the museum when the armor and the mummy came to life.

Helena:
One of my earliest memories is from kindergarten! I went out to recess with my classmates and saw graphiti for the very first time on some rocks on the playground. Not knowing what it was, I figured that must mean it was okay to draw on the rocks! I proceeded to joyfully make very large marks all over the rocks with my crayons… until my teacher came over and stopped me. I was very confused about why I was in trouble!
