Artist Interview With Sonia Semone

Today’s Artist Interview Is With Sonia Semone From Texas
Whopple: How long have you been an artist?
Sonia: A long time. I had always taken the standard art classes when I was in elementary and middle school, but high school was the time I really started to take more interest in art.
Whopple: Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Sonia: It is hard to pin point the first creative spark I had but like I said before high school was a place where I started pushing boundaries with my work. I would take an assignment that was literal and dream it into abstraction. This didn’t win me any favors with my teacher.

Whopple: Do you make a living with your art?
Sonia: Yes I do and it is one of the things I am most proud of. It is not hard to be an artist, but it is very hard to sell even one piece of work. Ask Van Gogh!
Whopple: How many hours a day do you create?
Sonia: I used to spend 4 to 5 days a week painting. Now I spend less because of sculptural endeavors. I am constantly thinking about my artwork though. I think about it all the time, every day.
Whopple: How did you pick your creative medium?
Sonia: I love the immediacy of painting. When I say that people ask me, “what does that mean.” It means that when I paint I have an immediate result. I can move pigment around my canvas, cover it up, uncover it. You can’t do this with many other art forms, they take a long time to see the big picture.
Whopple: What are your inspirations?
Sonia: Inspiration strikes me at all the time. I see color combos and I know I have to put them down. I paint paintings in my head that never make it to canvas because I may be in the bed and about to go to sleep. Sometimes I have gotten up and written them down, but they are better left in my head.

Whopple: How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Sonia: I had heard of this wall before and can say that I had not really met it until this year. I stopped painting for 4 or so months because I was traveling and busy. When I got back I could not get in the groove. I was very frustrated and didn’t want to make. So I didn’t. I think that is the best thing for a slump. Some people say just keep making new work. I say just stop and sit back until you feel like creating. Art is one thing, but it is not a liar. If a piece is made without the passion it will show through.
Whopple: What was your first job?
Sonia: A front desk girl at the gym. My boss was a boozer and the liquor store delivered 3 large gallons of whiskey every day.
Whopple: What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Sonia: I am a self proclaimed chocolate addict!
Whopple: What gives you hope in the world?
Sonia: The kindness in people.
Whopple: What do you wish you could do?
Sonia: I am happy doing what I am doing. I would love to travel the world.
Whopple: What are your artistic goals?
Sonia: My goals are to continue to push the envelope with my work. I also represent other artists in selling their work. It makes me happy to be a part of selling other artists works.
Whopple: What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
Sonia: The first large sale I made was pretty darn exciting. I hadn’t sold that much and I sold a 30 x 40 painting. I was so excited I could hardly stand myself. It was also a piece a gallery had asked me to alter, which I did not, and to lower the price, which I also did not. I took the work out of the gallery and sold it myself!
