Artist Interview With Olivia Alexander

Today’s Artist Interview Is With Olivia Alexander From Shellharbour, Australia.
Whopple: How long have you been an artist?
Olivia: I started as a teenager but gave it up for many years. I returned to it 8 years ago and have worked at it every day since then.
Whopple: Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Olivia: As a teenager I loved to draw cartoons. My best friend’s Mum encouraged me to draw something ‘real’. It was then I found I could really draw. I still remember the thrill I felt at realizing I had a ‘gift.’

Whopple: Do you make a living with your art?
Olivia: Not at this stage. It is my long term goal.
Whopple: How many hours a day do you create?
Olivia: I work part time to supplement my income but still work on my art each day, whether it be painting, marketing, or study.
Whopple: How did you pick your creative medium?
Olivia: I work with Mixed Media. I love the freedom this gives me. I love to experiment.

Whopple: What are your inspirations?
Olivia: Inspirations are everywhere! I live on the coast so beaches, headlands, and rock-scapes feature in my work. I love textures, colors and shapes whether it be patterns on tree trunks or shapes and lines in rocks.
Whopple: How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Olivia: You know, I’ve really learned not to panic when this happens! I often paint up to 12 paintings one after the other, then there may be nothing for a month or two. During that dry time I try to ‘refill’ myself. Reading art books, interacting with other artists, going out taking photos are all part of getting recharged. Before I know it the inspiration comes. Artists often spend a lot of time by themselves, it’s important to have regular social times with like minded people.

Whopple: What was your first job?
Olivia: Breaking and training show horses in outback Alice Springs, Northern Territory.
Whopple: What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Olivia: I always start with a Latte! My time painting is always a special time. Raspberry Licorice is also on the menu!
Whopple: What gives you hope in the world?
Olivia: As a Christian I guess I have a different view about things. There are so many good people out there and in amongst the bad things there are still good things happening. We live on a beautiful planet!
Whopple: What do you wish you could do?
Olivia: Make a difference to others. Make a mark, a good one that is!

Whopple: What are your artistic goals?
Olivia: To earn my living via art. What could be better?
Whopple: What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
Olivia: When I was invited by the ‘Australian Artist’ magazine to write a tutorial article for the readers.
