Artist Interview With Marilyn Green

Today’s Artist Interview Is With Marilyn Green From Hempstead, New York.

Whopple:  How long have you been an artist?
Marilyn:
Around 40 years

Whopple:  Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Marilyn:
My father and grandfather were painters and I was given oils and a brush before I started school.

Whopple:  Do you make a living with your art?
Marilyn:
Partially.

Whopple:  How many hours a day do you create?
Marilyn:
5-10 hours

Whopple:  How did you pick your creative medium?
Marilyn:
When traveling I’ve encountered art forms that suggested adaptations, like the Retablos I saw in Peru, which sent me in the direction of canvases in cabinets that open and close. Some came from solving a problem; I wanted to hang figures from a carousel and ended up working on shaped plywood in oils.

Whopple:  What are your inspirations?
Marilyn:
Folk art, J.S. Bach, nature, animals, Mitsuko Uchida, mythology, the Hubble space images, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, William Blake, C.S. Lewis

Whopple:  What is your favorite art related book?
Marilyn:
Joseph Campbell The Hero with a Thousand Faces

Whopple:  How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Marilyn:
It hasn’t happened yet. I have lots of bulging sketchbooks, and my problem is getting time to bring them to completion.

Whopple:  What was your first job?
Marilyn:
Babysitting. In art, painting a mural for a restaurant.

Whopple:  What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Marilyn:
It used to be coffee, until I kept dipping my brushes into the cup instead of the turpentine. Now I wait until I take a break.

Whopple:  What gives you hope in the world?
Marilyn:
International travel, where I see how much the same we all are, and the kinship I feel across language issues with other artists of all kinds, also love to and from animals and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.

Whopple:  What do you wish you could do?
Marilyn:
Paint in light, create an entire building of art, decorate a theater or hospital, bring delight to people in fear

Whopple:  What are your artistic goals?
Marilyn:
I’d like to expand the forms I’ve started: more works behind doors, shaped plywood pieces, interactive murals, dance and theater sets, as well as pieces for the home.

Whopple:  What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
Marilyn:
Receiving a two-year artist-in-residence grant to create a huge multi-media installation – license to kill.
