Today’s Artist Interview Is With Lynne Taetzsh From Ithaca, NY

Whopple: How long have you been an artist?
Lynne: Since I can remember being conscious.

Whopple: Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Lynne:
I always loved making things and drawing things, beginning with flour dough and crayons. When I was old enough to get an allowance, I spent it all on art and craft supplies. As a teenager, I drew portraits of everyone in the family.

Whopple: Do you make a living with your art?
Lynne:
Yes.

Whopple: How many hours a day do you create?
Lynne:
I create for 3 or 4 hours in the mornings, and spend the rest of the day managing my art business, which is more than a full time job.

Whopple: How did you pick your creative medium?
Lynne:
My favorite medium was oil paint, but in the 1980s I lived in Southern Florida, and the paintings never seemed to dry. I switched then to acrylics, and now I would not switch back. Acrylic dries fast, which is perfect for my method of painting in layers. I find it a versatile medium for canvas or paper.

Whopple: What are your inspirations?
Lynne:
My biggest inspiration is music. While I paint, I listen to Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Ani DeFranco, Laurie Anderson, Vicki Genfan–whatever fits my mood for the day. I am also inspired by the visual world, especially the changing landscape around me in the beautiful finger lakes region where I live.

Whopple: How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Lynne:
I make art five or six days a week whether I feel like it or not. I don’t wait for inspiration. There are bad days when nothing seems to be working, but I push through those. The process itself will eventually make something happen.

Whopple: What was your first job?
Lynne:
I worked as a typist and secretary to support myself. I tried selling Kirby vacuum cleaners and waitressing, but failed at both.

Whopple: What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Lynne:
I love nuts and chocolate. That’s my reward for a hard morning’s work–sitting with a cup of green tea and munching.

Whopple: What gives you hope in the world?
Lynne:
Life. It is a gift to celebrate in whatever way we can.

Whopple: What do you wish you could do?
Lynne:
I wish I could live in the moment.

Whopple: What are your artistic goals?
Lynne:
My goal is to keep making art as long as I am able to, and to let that process unfold as freely as possible.

Whopple: What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
Lynne:
The most exciting moment for me is the discovery that comes about through trusting the process. It is as if the painting has almost created itself.

  • Wow! I love the bold colors and strokes. Although I don’t have any background in art appreciation, Taetzch’s work is amazing. I also like the way she said that even when she doesn’t feel like it, she continues to paint, even without inspiration. I think that’s a good advice to follow. What would she advice to younger artists who are advised not to pursue art as a career because it is not lucrative?

  • Excellent! Her works are all awesome. But what i love most is the last painting. It is so colorful.
