Today’s Artist Interview Is With Lisa Palombo From Caldwell, New Jersey.

Whopple: How long have you been an artist?

Lisa:
Over 20 years professional, but I would be remiss in saying I felt like a “real” artist when I was 9 yrs old. I went to my first summer camp program at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

Whopple: Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Lisa:
Oh I remember it so vividly. I was nine at the RISD beach summer camp. I overheard my teacher tell my mother not to worry because when I am older I will be able to “see” more. (I was the youngest in the class). That day, I forced my self to “see” more and painted a house with every detailed shingle on the roof. That painting won an award at the end of the summer. The president of RISD approached my mother to purchase the painting, but she declined. To this day, I challenge myself to look more than I think I know. I challenge myself everyday to paint better than yesterday. Little did I know at nine I “caught the creative bug” that has since fueled me for 44 years!

Thankfully, I have the painting on my bedroom wall. Every morning, it reminds me why I am an artist.

Whopple: Do you make a living with your art?
Lisa:
Blissfully, yes!

Whopple: How many hours a day do you create?
Lisa:
From 9am-3pm. I pick up my daughter from nursery school at 3pm and switch to my mommy job. Thankfully I do all my office and computer work at night. I LOVE to paint by day light and have many windows in my studio.

Whopple: How did you pick your creative medium?
Lisa:
It picked me many years ago.

Whopple: What are your inspirations?
Lisa:
Flowers. I think I was a fairy in my past life. :0)

Whopple: How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Lisa:
I pack up my camera and kids and we go to gardens for photo shoots. I look for lots of references when the flowers are blooming to use during those cold winter months. Last spring my daughter looked as I feel in one of our favorite gardens. She was running so freely among the rose garden chasing butter flies and exuding pure joy. I have since painted her in some garden pieces. I love when a series just presents it’s self. When I really hit a wall, I go to the MET or MOMA, luckily the NYC museums are only 30 minutes away!

Whopple: What was your first job?
Lisa:
My first book cover when I was still in art school. I drove 4 hrs to NYC to have St. Martins Press look at my portfolio. The art director gave me my first book cover on the spot. I left with a manuscript and deadline for rough sketches. I was on cloud nine! (This was obviously before websites and email).

Whopple: What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Lisa:
I love this question, because many creative types reward themselves with food. Mine is ice coffee in the summer and hot chocolate in the winter. Yum!

Whopple: What gives you hope in the world?
Lisa:
My children. Watching my 4 year old daughter use her crayon the “correct way.”

Whopple: What do you wish you could do?
Lisa:
Visit Spain.

Whopple: What are your artistic goals?
Lisa:
To paint like Van Gogh.

Whopple: What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
Lisa:
When I gave up my illustration career and decided to be a fine artist was the most powerful, freeing and exciting moment as an artist.
