Today’s Artist Interview Is With Justin Rae From Salt Lake City, Utah.

Whopple:  How long have you been an artist?
Justin:
Since elementary school.

Whopple:  Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Justin:
I first really started with drawing and would draw Disney cartoon characters. Then I would draw marvel comic characters and create my own comics.  My grandmother is a skilled oil painter and taught my siblings and I oil on canvas during summers when school was out. Later in school I took art classes and learned to enjoy ceramics, watercolor and acrylics.

Justin:
I don’t make a living off my art work.

Whopple:  How many hours a day do you create?
Justin:
Variably, weekly average of 7 hours.

Whopple:  How did you pick your creative medium?
Justin:
It kind of picked me.  I purchased a little point and shoot camera with a lot of manual options.  I wasn’t happy with some of the photos from automatic settings that I captured from my hiking and camping adventures so I started to play with the manual setting and started to realize I was capturing great scenes.  While living in Florida I purchased an underwater housing and captured shots while scuba diving.  These shots were creative and different.  Eventually I purchased an SLR. Here I am now taking photos on a regular basis.

Whopple:  What are your inspirations?
Justin:
My inspirations are nature and the surrounding environments we’re in all the time.  I’m continually awe inspired by the way the morning light brings new energy and love the way light moves us in different ways.  These things inspire me to capture the power and energy of this light and share it.

Whopple:  What is your favorite art related book?
Justin:
Currently my favorite art book is “A World in HDR” by Trey Ratcliff.

Whopple:  How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Justin:
I go camping some place new and explore a new place.

Whopple:  What was your first job?
Justin:
My first “job” was selling stationary and wrapping paper because it paid better than my parents’ allowance. My first real job was at Papa Johns in Gainesville, Florida.

Whopple:  What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Justin:
Granola bars for sure, the soft chewy kind are the best and leave less mess.  I’ll enjoy a good cinnamon roll when it’s late and I want to stay up a little later.

Whopple:  What gives you hope in the world?
Justin:
My faith and religion first and foremost and then seeing the goodness in people doing things for others.

Whopple:  What do you wish you could do?
Justin:
I wish I could travel the world taking photos and, aside from the art world, own my own company.

I’d love to have a book of my photography from travels and adventures and have my photos on walls of businesses and homes.

Whopple:  What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
Justin:
When I printed and sold my first 24 x 36 print for over $300.  Just seeing it printed was great.  But really the greatest moments are when I’m done with a photo shoot or working on a piece and realize I have something I’m really happy with and think this is mine and I’m well pleased with it.

One Response to Artist Interview With Justin Rae

  • Wow, I really think Justin Rea’s art is amazing. I really like the depth he is able to capture in his mediums. Two things really surprise me about him and his work. First that his exposure to his early workings with being creative was much like mine. Comic books and cartoons were some of my first steps into creativity at a very young age. The other thing that surprises me is that Justin doesn’t make a living from his works and yet they are so amazing! I do an lot of stencil art, modern wall art, abstract art and Buddha art. I find it interesting how artists can start one journey and head into a different direction.
