Artist Interview With Julia Farris

Today’s Artist Interview Is With Julia Farris from Savannah, GA.
Whopple: How long have you been an artist?
Julia: I come from a family of artists and have been interested in art of various forms all of my life. My interest in photography probably started in high school when I was on the photography staff, and after taking a photography course in college.
Whopple: Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Julia: I’ve tried various creative attempts throughout my life but didn’t seem to have been born with the talent for drawing & painting that my other family members have. Once I started combining my love of nature with my love of photography I felt I finally found my creative niche.
Whopple: Do you make a living with your art?
Julia: I’ve just started trying to market my photography within this year, so I’m not making a living at it full time yet. I have sold some prints, and I offer a horse/pet portrait package and have done some business with that.
Whopple: How many hours a day do you create?
Julia: It depends…I find my inspiration whenever I’m outdoors so I’ll usually spend an afternoon hiking through the woods, by the beach, or river. I shoot when I find something I want to capture. Once I download them onto my computer I’ll go through and pick the best ones. I’ll do some minor editing, such a cropping & maybe a little brightness adjustment or color adjustment. It’s really tough to put a time frame on it.
Whopple: How did you pick your creative medium?
Julia: I think it came from my love of the outdoors and wanting to capture the feeling or essence that I feel when I see something beautiful. It seemed to pick me.
Whopple: What are your inspirations?
Julia: The world around me is my biggest inspiration, of course. I do get inspired by other photographers. Ansel Adams was my first artist inspiration.
Whopple: How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Julia: Probably just to step back from it for awhile. A long bike ride also helps me recharge.
Whopple: What was your first job?
Julia: My first photography job was taking some publicity photos of a local entertainer many years ago in MO (where I’m originally from). I enjoyed it but I’ve found I enjoy nature photography more.
Whopple: What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Julia: I’m not really a snacker…especially when I’m out shooting. I do like to have a good breakfast when I’m planning to go on a long photo hike.
Whopple: What gives you hope in the world?
Julia: That’s a tough question. There’s so many negative things going on in the world these days. When I’m affected personally I try to focus on the positives in my life. I’m fortunate to live in coastal GA, where there is so much beauty around me to capture. I guess that gives me hope that there will always be something beautiful somewhere, no matter how tough times get.
Whopple: What do you wish you could do?
Julia: I want to help & make a difference in the lives of the people I love.
Whopple: What are your artistic goals?
Julia: I’d like to one day have an exhibit in a gallery. And I want to continue to learn and become better & better in this craft.
Whopple: What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
Julia: In February of this year my photo “Arbor Reflections” won 3rd place in the 2nd Annual GA Arbor Day Photo Competition at Melon Bluff Nature & Heritage Center. It was the first competition I had ever entered and I was among many very talented photographers, so I was very honored to have placed 3rd. It’s also very exciting when someone buys a piece of my work…not for the money made, but just knowing they want something I’ve done to be a part of their home. It’s very gratifying to think I’ve given someone something pleasurable to look at.
