Artist Interview With Cherie Balowski

Today’s Artist Interview Is With Cherie Balowski From Union City, Michigan.

Whopple: How long have you been an artist?
Cherie:
I have always been an artist. From a very early age I was either painting or drawing, or making things out of clay, cutting out paper or material and making collages, I was more of a ‘crafter’ when I was young.

Whopple: Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Cherie:
My first ‘masterpiece’ was a cotton cloth ‘duster’ (dusting rag) that I had colored in a Sunday school class. Although I was very young, I remember thinking that this was really neat to actually draw on cloth! The edges were cut with pinking shears and the teacher was kind enough to write my name on it for me, but I was very upset that she spelled my name wrong! I still have that first ‘work of art’ too!

Artist Interview

Whopple: Do you make a living with your art?
Cherie:
I try to make a living with my art. I am currently designing for several POD sites, (Print On Demand) and also have sold my original art and craft items at some of the auction sites, handmade sites as well as from my personal website.

Whopple: How many hours a day do you create?
Cherie:
I probably create at least eight hours a day, minimum. There are times when I get on a roll and don’t stop creating, easily working into the wee hours, and sometimes staying up overnight! Time flies when you are having fun, it is true!

“Cherie sketched this dragon and woman on textured paper, then scanned it and colored it in using Photoshop”

Whopple: How did you pick your creative medium?
Cherie:
Being introduced to the Photoshop program through the company that I work for, I was asked to create a brochure for our products, and quickly realized how cool this program is. I knew about graphic tablets and figured that I’d better get one and get an art program at home right away! Although I create using various art media, I must say that creating digital art is one of my favorites.

Artist Interview

Whopple: What are your inspirations?
Cherie:
Usually my inspirations come from what I am feeling at the time, my mood at the moment. Music is always a great inspiration for me. Holidays are good inspirations, they are always fun to create for and they challenge me to try to design something very ‘different’ from what I have designed before.

Artist Interviews

Whopple: How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Cherie:
When my creativity hits the wall, first, I get out of my ‘art room’ and get away from the computer! Then I do something else that I love to do, like strum my guitar and sing, maybe record a song at MySpace karaoke, or I go for a walk, take pictures, perhaps I’ll cook something that I’ve never cooked before or, watch old movies, LOVE old movies!

Whopple: What was your first job?
Cherie:
My first job was watching the neighbor lady’s two boys. I cleaned her house while she was away and so that became my second job with her as well.

Whopple: What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Cherie:
My favorite snack foods are Cheezits, fruits, and coffee when I’m creating. I love cookies too, yum! Often I’ll just have them nearby and take a break and munch, don’t want anything near the artwork though!

Whopple: What gives you hope in the world?
Cherie:
The people that I’m surrounded by, personally and on the internet, give me an enormous amount of hope because they are all so giving, creative, kind and fun! You have to search out the good people and the things that they are doing in life, not depending on the latest news or television shows, which don’t have much of anything to show except for vain silliness or negativity. Look for people who are doing good, surround yourself with those you respect and admire, they will give you hope too!

Whopple: What do you wish you could do?
Cherie:
I wish I could see all of the countries of the world. I wish I could ride a motorcycle in a motocross event, snowboard down a mountain, and act in a huge movie with a well known actor (and of course, it becomes a huge hit!) and I wish I could fly!

Whopple: What are your artistic goals?
Cherie:
My artistic goals are to be a published artist, to be an accomplished painter using watercolor, oils and acrylics…and to have my own business, where people commission me for their paintings.

Artist Interview

Whopple: What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
Cherie:
My most exciting moment as an artist was when I first sold something that I had created. I couldn’t believe that someone really wanted to have my artwork in their home and it made me feel so proud!
