Artist Interview With Alicia Sotherland

Today’s Artist Interview Is With Alicia Sotherland From Escondido, California
Whopple: How long have you been an artist?
Alicia: Ten years this November
Whopple: Tell us about your first attempts to be creative.
Alicia: As a child of artists I would draw once in a while and enjoyed drawing people.
Whopple: Do you make a living with your art?
Alicia: I do ok, but to support myself I still
have to have another source of income.
Whopple: How many hours a day do you create?
Alicia: It goes in spurts. Sometimes I paint everyday
for a while and I feel like the mad professor down
in my studio. And then I can go for a week or so doing other
things that give me enjoyment besides painting.
Whopple: How did you pick your creative medium?
Alicia: I saw one of my favorite artists using pastel over
watercolor ( I started with watercolor) and then eventually
I tried just the pastel and fell in love with it.
Whopple: What are your inspirations?
Alicia: Feeling something is what inspires me, and how I can see an
emotion in a face, or how I want to create an emotion in a
face that may not actually be there, but the emotion is in me
and therefore I can communicate that in a painting.
Whopple: How do you recharge when your creativity hits the wall?
Alicia: I wait. I don’t ever force it. I am not a fan of painting
when you don’t want to. It always comes.
Whopple: What was your first job?
Alicia: Credit Manager
Whopple: What are your favorite snacks when you are creating?
Alicia: Gin Martini’s and Cheetos are my favorite snacks..but i try not to drink the Martini when I am painting…:-)
Whopple: What gives you hope in the world?
Alicia: What give me hope is seeing how the people are in my own little sphere. I am not too hopeful when I look at the big picture. So I stay focused on my little world. And try to know just enough of what is going on out there to keep me sane.
Whopple: What do you wish you could do?
Alicia: Nothing more than what I am already doing. This is it.
Whopple: What are your artistic goals?
Alicia: To continue to grow and learn..and support me and my husband someday.
Whopple: What has been your most exciting moment as an artist?
Alicia: Getting into the National Show that is going on right now in New York. Pastel Society of America 37th Juried Exhibition.
And looking forward to teaching a 2 week workshop in France next year.
But beyond all this, the one that i always think of is when I sold my
first painting. I was over the moon!
